Dave Olson- Drums
Dave was a member of The Robert Cray Band for 11 years, touring the world and sharing the stage with music legends such as Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Phil Collins, Tina Turner, Huey Lewis, John Fogarty, B.B.King, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and many more. Dave recorded 4 CDs with The Robert Cray Band, received 2 GRAMMY awards and multiple Gold and Platinum records. During that time, he also performed on several television shows, such as Saturday Night Live and The Tonight Show. MTV and VH1 aired music videos from the band as well. He later recorded and toured with Savoy Brown and Texas Heat. Dave is currently living in Camillus, NY with his wife and 2 daughters.He has been teaching Drum Set for 15 years.
Aaron Velardi- Trumpet
Aaron holds a BA in music and a minor in audio productions from Ithaca College and a Master’s in Education from LeMoyne College. An accomplished vocalist, pianist, and trumpet player, Aaron toured nationally with the 8-piece funk/jam band Nozmo King for more than 5 years. Opening for acts like Soulive, Merl Sanders, The Jerry Garcia Band and Derek Trucks, Nozmo’s relationship with Limelite Entertainment eventually landed them in Boston in early 2000. Shortly after, Nozmo King disbanded. Aaron went on to teach instrumental and vocal music both privately and in public schools. He also continued to perform with several bands in the Boston area. A (K-12) Certified Music Teacher, Aaron is currently teaching instrumental music at Chittenango High School, maintaining a private studio, and performing frequently throughout the Northeast.
Donald Goodness- Brass
Don Studied at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, and received his Masters degree in Music from Catholic University of America in Washington D.C.. He is a certified New York State Music Teacher, and a NYSSMA adjudicator for All State Brass, Jazz, and other major organizations. Don also supervises student teachers in Central New York for The Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam. Don has over twenty years of experience as a public school music teacher, and performs regularly with groups in the area. Some of these include principal trumpet in The Onondaga Civic Symphony Orchestra and lead trumpet in The Do Good Swing Band. Don is a Former member of The 1st US Army Band with performances in Arlington and Gettysburg Cemeteries as well as The World Series of Baseball. He studied with David Flowers (National Symphony Orchestra) and international clinician and author Jerome Callet. Flexible teaching style, adaptable for beginners and advanced students. Classical and Commercial styles.
John Spillet- Saxophone
John graduated
from Syracuse University School of Music earning a B.M. degree in
music education with performance honors. He received a M.M. degree in
saxophone performance from Northwestern University, where he studied
classical saxophone with Frederick Hemke and conducting with John
Paynter. He has pursued additional postgraduate work at the Eastman
School of Music, where he studied jazz saxophone with Ramon Ricker
and jazz improvisation with Fred Sturm.
John’s continuing educational activities have included work with
Jamey Aebersold, David Baker, Deborah Coble, Jerry Coker, Rick
Montalbano, Edward Lisk, Joe Riposo, and Larry Teal.
At Le Moyne College, He served as Director of the Jazz Ensemble and an adjunct instructor for nine years. John created and taught an innovative Jazz Improvisation course and he founded and directed the Jazz Combo and Flute Ensemble. He also taught private saxophone lessons.An experienced studio saxophone instructor, John has extensive teaching experience in classical, jazz, and contemporary saxophone styles. He has a long history of successful private teaching and preparing students for college auditions, county and state honors ensemble auditions, and for careers in professional performance and music education.
John served as Band Director at Solvay High School, where he taught instrumental music for 33 years. He conducted the Concert Band, Jazz Combo, and taught all instrumental music lessons. He also chaired the Music Department for the Solvay School District. His high school concert band and jazz combo received numerous local, state, and regional awards for musical excellence. Under John’s leadership, the music program became an integral part of the Solvay/Geddes and Greater Syracuse community. His student ensembles performed at numerous events serving approximately forty school and community organizations.
John is currently or has been an active member in the following professional music and educational organizations: American Federation of Musicians (AFM) Local 78, American Bandmasters Association (ABA), International Association of Jazz Educators (IAJE), Jazz Appreciation Society of Syracuse (JASS), Music Educators National Conference (MENC), New York State Band Directors Association (NYSBDA), New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA), North American Saxophone Alliance (NASA), the Onondaga County Music Educators Association (OCMEA), and the Central New York Jazz Arts Foundation (CNYJAF).

Ron Keck- Drums
Ron began his extensive career studying music at Onondaga Community College and Syracuse University, and teaching private percussion lessons. For 25 years Ron taught the best and brightest percussion musicians in the Central New York area, gaining notoriety as one of the regions premiere instructors.Along with his private lessons, Ron composes and arranges for percussion. Through KDA Productions, Ron edited and mastered audio for 20 years, until founding SubCat Studios.
Kevin Dean- Drums
Kevin has been drumming with Brand New Sin, touring the USA and UK since 2002 along side many well knows bands such as Motorhead, Black Label Society, Saliva, Breaking Benjamin, Type O Negative, Clutch, Soil, Mushroomhead, The Cult and more. They have opened for Godsmack, Dope, Chris Cornell, The Deftones, Drowning Pool, Audiovent, Dillinger Escape Plan, and countless others. In May of 2011, Brand New Sin signed a worldwide distribution and marketing deal with Goomba Music and Eone Entertainment, releasing their 5th full length album in fall of 2011. With an A.A.S. in Music Education/Music Merchandising from SUNY Onondaga, 20+ years of live and studio drumming experience, and having played over 1000 shows, Kevin has also been inspiring the youth of the Syracuse area teaching drums and percussion since 1999. Currently his studio can be found in the SubCat Music Studios complex at 219 West St in Syracuse, NY. In the summer of 2011, he rocked out with the kids as the drum instructor for Rock Camp in Syracuse, teaching hands on rock band interaction. Kevin proudly endorses Evans Drum Heads, Vic Firth Sticks and Soultone Cymbals.
Aaron Welcher- Voice/ Program Coordinator
Aaron is a graduate of the Crane School of Music with a Bachelors of Music. Aaron received his vocal training from renowned baritone David Pittman-Jennings. He currently performs with the Syracuse Vocal Ensemble, a chamber group performing a wide range of repertoire. For three years he was a vocalist with the Crane Latin Ensemble(salsa/mambo big band), and with that group was lucky enough to share the stage with the Mambo Legends Orchestra (including Jose Madiera, Johnny Rodriguez, Frankie Vazquez, and many more), and perform in Canada and Mexico numerous times. In the jazz idiom, he has performed under the direction of such greats as Kim Nazarian, Darmon Meader, and Steve Zegree. He also has performed with several rock/soul bands as the guitarist and frontman. Classical, jazz/pop styles; All ages/ experience levels
Cathy LaManna- Piano/Drums
Cathy is a multi-instrumentalist who has studied at Berklee School of Music and Drummers Collective, as well as with private instructors throughout her career. She is also a two-time SAMMY award winner for her drumming with Joe Whiting, and Karen Savoca & the Mind’s Eye. She continues to work with several Syracuse artists including Donna Colton, Joe Whiting, The Neverly Brothers/ Flashcubes/ Fab Cats, Mark Doyle, George Rossi, and the Enzian Bavarian Band.With more than 35 years of experience Cathy has a lot to offer aspiring musicians, young and old.
Melissa Gardiner- Piano/Trombone
Melissa Gardiner has an MM from The Juilliard School and a BFA from The University of Michigan. She has studied trombone for 16 years and piano for 9. She is fluent in many genres, including both classical and jazz.
Melissa has taught in many settings including private lessons, masterclasses and summer music camps.
She also has experience directing different musical ensembles. She recently released a CD with her own group entitled Transitions.

Arty Lennin- Guitar
Arty is a recipient of multiple SAMMY Awards, including the prestigious Hall of Fame, Best Rock Guitarist, as well as Best Acoustic Duo awards. His bands have performed as opening acts for international artists such as the Police, U2, Joe Jackson, Squeeze and several legendary artists. His seminal pop band The Flashcubes continue to maintain an enthusiastic following and Screentest participated in the MTV Basement Tape Awards. He has recordings released and has performed not just nationally, but in Europe and Japan. Arty is proficient at, and enjoys teaching beginner, intermediate, and advanced students in combining rock, blues, country and jazz concepts.
Justin Rock- Guitar/Bass
Justin is a graduate of Wayne State University performing arts school in Detroit, MI where he received a bachelor's degree in jazz studies and guitar performance. Justin has spent the last 10 years performing all over the Midwest, recording and composing original music, and teaching guitar and bass to a wide range of students. From the jazz clubs of Chicago to the streets of Central NY, Justin brings a open minded and flexible teaching perspective influenced from almost every musical genre. Specialties: Multi genre improvisation and lead/rhythm guitar techniques, music theory, ear training. Multi genre composition. Electric/Acoustic guitar. Electric Bass technique and improvisation. All ages/All skill levels
Joe Davoli- Violin/Fiddle
Joe Davoli is a graduate of DePaul university and attended TheBerklee School of Music. He has studied with improvisational greats Matt Glaser, Darol Anger and JoHn Blake. He is a consummate performer of several styles of music including Celtic, bluegrass, jazz, rock, blues and classical. In 2001 Joe comped and recorded music for the off-Broadway revival of Isael Horovitz's "The Indian Wants The Bronx." He has won two Syracuse Area music Awards; one for "Best Bluegrass Instrumentalist/Vocalist" in 2001 and the other in 2003 for his CD release with guitarist Harvey Nusbaum in the "Best Folk/Bluegrass Recording" category. In 2004 he served as musical supervisor for the the short film "Brando From The Neck Down," whose soundtrack features Joe playing fiddle and mandolin. Joe has published a successful method book for fiddle and mandolin that is currently in its second edition. His 2006 solo CD "GamePlan" has received international acclaim. He is currently a full time member of Ceili Rain. Joe is also In demand as a studio musician and teacher.
Emmett Van Slyke- Guitar
Composer, teacher, arranger, producer, and performer of styles ranging from country, blues, and folk, to jazz, classical, and rock. His score for “The Crucible” landed him an ACTF Kennedy Center award for outstanding musical composition. In addition to performance, Emmett teaches privately, conducts, and has participated in over 100 theatrical productions. Emmet has shared the stage with Jim Donovan of Rusted Root, Thomas Warfield, and many more. Emmett has been featured with Memories of Elvis, Brother Worm, Acid For Cathy, Hairy Bagel, Emmett Van Slyke and the Big Payback, Eddie Paul’s Blue Street Band, and currently Heliophonic.
Stephen Peters- Guitar
Stephen Peters has been playing the guitar for 13 years. He has received degrees in music from The Crane School of Music at Potsdam and Onondaga Community College. Stephen teaches a variety of styles that include rock, classical, metal, blues, and folk guitar. With a history of playing in rock bands and solo/ensemble classical guitar recitals, he encourages students to perform regularly. In addition to guitar performance and technique, Stephen incorporates the fundamentals of music such as theory, reading, composition, and improvisation.
Max McKee- Guitar/Bass
Max is a multi-instrumentalist, focusing on electric bass and acoustic and electric guitars in most genres of music. With over 15 years of music education, a bachelors degree in jazz studies, and 10+ years of "on the gig" experience, Max brings a flavor of spontaneity and improvisation into the lesson room. Combined with a gentle discipline, this approach can help the aspiring musician or the seasoned veteran reach that next level of musicality, and enjoy it!
Jon Lessels- Guitar/Bass
Jon received his B.A. in Music from Oswego State University in 2004, with a focus in Audio Engineering. He has been teaching for more than 7 years, beginning at the Clinton Academy of Performing and Creative Arts before he moved his talents to SubCat Studios. This summer Jon taught guitar at The Red House Rock Camp. Jon has taught guitar, bass, pop/rock piano, brass, and drums. Currently he performs with his long time band House Rules, and he has played with local acts No Chicks, Small Town Glory, and Father Sun. Jon also currently works at SubCat Studios as an engineer. During his time at the Clinton Acadamey, he worked as an engineer at Evolution Studios in Utica. Jon prides himself on being able to translate his abilities to many different musical styles, and accomodate any level of learner.
Bill Tillman- Bass
Bill Tillman has been playing bass since 1974, and teaching for fifteen years . Starting on drums when he was six he switched to bass when he was fourteen years old. He played bass in local bands in South Florida since 1977, including Jimmy Stowe And The Stowaway's, with whom he backed up music legend Jimmy Buffett.As the electric bass teacher at Sam Ashe Music he developed a teaching style designed to keep to keep lessons fun and interesting, including songs students wanted to learn by their favorite bands. Since moving to the Syracuse area in 2006 Bill has continued teaching private bass lessonsand also has been active in composing and recording music. Sight reading, ear training, and various picking techniques are covered in Bill's lessons with an approach that is conformed to each students level andinterest, with the goal of making them a knowledgeable, innovative and versatile bass player.
Jane Zell- Guitar/Voice
Guitarist, vocalist and teacher, studied guitar at Onondaga Community College and classical and jazz guitar and vocals at the University of Hawaii, Manoa. Zell performed and taught in the Hawaiian Islands for fifteen years before returning to Syracuse in 1996 where she produced a CD, Sista Moon, which was nominated for a Sammy. Her style is bluesy and soulful with jazz and island influences. She earned a Master degree in the Science of Education from SUNY Oswego and is NYS Certified in Art and Music. Recently retired, Zell continues to teach privately, perform and write music. Her performances include the Maui Jazz Festival, Maui Arts and Cultural Center, Philadelphia Folk Festival Camp Stage, and NYS Rhythm and Blues Festival. She also performs regionally at clubs, coffee houses, and for private parties.
Mitch Rudy- Drums
Mitch attended West Genesee High School where he played in the marching band. He then studied Music Education and percussion with James Petecsak at S.U.N.Y. Potsdam, and began arranging music. After college, he began substitute teaching in music and other subjects. Mitch has taught drum lessons for over 35 years beginning at DeSantis Music Schoolhouse in 1975 and later at his home. He also has written many arrangements in various styles. Mitch is still substitute teaching in local school districts. Mitch has performed with John Spillet, Rhythmaires, arranged for Mario DeSantis, Tod Hobin, Regal Brass, Ron Stewart, and performs at the Community Tabernacle.
